We had an amazing night at the AIA El Paso Chapter 2020 Annual Design Awards on Thursday November 19th — Powered by PechaKucha!  We honored ten fantastic projects from around the Borderland with awards.  Eight of our member firms and students submitted fourteen projects that were reviewed by our esteemed jurors Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham Architecture in Tokyo and creators of PechaKucha.  Big thanks out to Astrid and Mark for their thoughtful consideration of the work submitted by our AIA El Paso Chapter.

It is interesting how the events of 2020 have challenged us to rethink how we do things and forge new ground.  The result was a truly interactive design awards where the design award winners were able to share their work in the 20x20 PechaKucha format.  We had 180+ people live from El Paso and around the globe participating and watching what became quite the International Design Awards here in El Paso.  Congratulations to all the project teams who were honored!

We feel that any completed project always deserves a trophy, simply for the sheer effort, the passion and commitment of all the people involved. It is not easy to judge a competition when there are so many deserving projects. I truly believe that everybody very much contributed in making El Paso a nicer place!
— Astrid Klein
We were really impressed with the level of design and commitment all the entries made to architecture in El Paso. It was very encouraging to be able to recognize so many excellent new schools and education facilities in the awards. They were all wonderful, positive and colorful new beacons for the city. Your love of the city’s heritage also shone through in many of the other projects, which were happy to celebrate! Congratulations to everyone that entered!
